Flexible Entry Points and Study Locations for MD Tracks

St. George’s University offers flexible entry points into its MD program, accommodating students from various educational backgrounds worldwide. Depending on their qualifications, students can enter at different stages of the program: the Seven-Year MD Track begins at Preclinical Year 1, the Six-Year MD Track at Preclinical Year 2, and the Five-Year MD Track at Preclinical Year 3. Students have the option to start their studies in either Grenada or the UK. After completing the preclinical phase, students proceed to the Four-Year MD Program, where they can choose to begin the clinical phase in either the UK or Grenada. During the final two years of the program, students undertake clinical rotations at one of over 75 partner hospitals and health centers in the USA or UK.

Further Education: AS Levels, Baccalaureate, South Africa Matric, Higher School Exam, Irish Leaving Certificate.

BTEC Diploma: Must be in the appropriate sciences with grades of Distinction.

Secondary School and American High School Diploma: Overall average of 90% or better with strong science performance.

Year 3 Tuition Fees: $41,716

Entry Requirements:

Advanced Levels (A Levels): A minimum of 3 subjects with grades A or B in biology, chemistry, and either math or physics. If neither math nor physics was taken at A Levels, a strong third non-science subject may be accepted, provided there is proof that math or physics was taken at AS Level.

Approved Foundation Programs: SGU recognizes and approves a range of science/medical pathway programs.

Full IB Diploma: Requires a minimum score of 32 points. A minimum of 2 Higher Level (HL) science subjects is required, which must include chemistry and biology, with results of 5 or higher.

The 4-Year MD Program at St. George’s University offers international students a rigorous and rewarding medical education. The program is renowned worldwide and provides flexibility in study locations, allowing students to begin their education in Grenada or the UK.

The program is structured into two main phases: the basic sciences phase and the clinical training phase. During the basic sciences phase, students acquire a solid foundation in medical fundamentals, including anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. This phase is designed to equip students with the essential knowledge required for advanced medical practice.

In the clinical training phase, students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through rotations in a variety of medical settings. These rotations take place at over 75 affiliated hospitals and health systems in the US and UK, providing students with diverse and valuable clinical exposure.

St. George’s University is committed to ensuring its graduates secure placements in competitive residency programs. The school has a strong track record of achieving residency placement rates that exceed the national average. In 2024, SGU graduates matched into more than 940 US residencies, reflecting the university’s commitment to excellence in medical education.

School Of Medicine: 4-Year MD Program Entry Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree Requirement:

Four-Year MD Program: Medical Year 1 – Bachelor’s Degree in the requisite sciences.

English Language Requirements:

  • IELTS: 7.0 overall and 7.0 on each band.
  • TOEFL: 94-101 overall (24-26 reading, 24-26 listening, 23 speaking, 27-28 writing).
  • Password Skills: Scoring is the same as IELTS for direct entry.
  • C1 Advanced (CAE): 185 overall and 185 in each band.
  • PTE Academic: 66.3 overall (67.6 reading, 66.2 listening, 65.3 speaking, 82.3 writing).
  • Duolingo English Test (DET): 130 overall and 130 on each band.
  • Kaplan Test of English (KTE): 510 overall and 510 on each band.

Students in the 5-Year MD Track will spend 1 year in Preclinical Sciences (Preclinical Year 3) and 1 year in Basic Sciences (Medical Year 1), followed by 2 years of Clinical Rotations in the US or UK. Students in the 4-Year MD Program can begin their studies in Grenada or the UK and complete 2 years of Clinical Rotations at over 75 affiliated hospitals and health systems in the US or UK.

Important Note: Clinical rotations in the UK are not permitted during the final six months of the program.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Assesses a student’s abilities in listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Results are reported as band scores on a scale from 1 (lowest) to 9 (highest).

The overall band score is the average of the four component scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.

Component scores are weighted equally.

SGU Requirement: A minimum overall band score of 7.0, with 7.0 in each band (listening, reading, writing, and speaking).

A score of 7 indicates a good user skill level:

    • The test taker has operational command of the language.
    • There may be occasional inaccuracies or misunderstandings in some situations.
    • They generally handle complex language well and understand detailed reasoning.

Medical Academic Communication (MAC)

  • SGU offers Medical Academic Communication (MAC) support to help students strengthen their English language and communication skills.
  • Includes one (1) hour of language/communication support per week.
  • Tailored to the needs of medical students.
